Good Luck
Chuck
Dane Cook keeps getting
pushed as the next Adam Sandler, though his films play
more like David Spade. Take Employee
of the Month or this insipid farce about a bachelor hexed so he can get
laid all he wants but can never find true love. Cook’s dentist, Charlie Logan
is something of an urban legend, if you sleep with him, you’re next romance
will be Mr. Right—doing Chuck is good luck. Of course Charlie meets Ms. Right
in the form of Cam (Jessica Alba) a klutzy penguin handler at the local
aquarium, but the curse causes consummation complications Cook and Alba, who
is sexy cute to a T, have little chemistry. Some of that’s due to the inept
direction by usual editor Mark Helfrich and the
woefully wooden dialogue, but most of it’s due to Cook being effective only
in gonzo mode—including a ridiculously bombastic fuck montage. Like the
leads, little of it gels, leaning Cook still longing for his launching.
